I am not going home for Christmas. I am not working either. I got a Boston Butt, some sweet potatoes and some peppers. I will be alright. Marvin Gaye has this beautifully sad song from the album, You’re The Man which was released in 2019 but recorded way back in 1972.
Care Package
I met Keavy Landreth over 13 years ago. She started with Kumquat Cupcakery, then she opened Butter & Scotch (which shuttered this year) and now she’s doing Love, Nelly care package. I saw the January care package and it includes tea, Mike’s Hot Honey, macaroons and sage. I subscribed and you should too.
From Jubilee to Juneteenth
Yesterday, there was a small event at one of the public squares in Savannah celebrating Jubilee Freedom Day. Jubilee commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Savannah. Today I found out that my friend Nicole Taylor will be writing a cookbook about Juneteenth that will be published by Simon & Schuster. Watermelon and Red Bird will be out in 2022.
A Bottle of Coca-Cola
The way Viola Davis drank a bottle of Coca Cola in Ma Rainey is Oscar worthy. Chadwick Boseman was so good that it makes me wonder what else he would have done if he still alive. If you watch the Netflix film, make sure you the watch the companion video, ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, A Legacy Brought To Screen’. It is a mini documentary on the play, the making of the film and The Great Migration. My cousin Imani Perry provides commentary on The Great Migration. [I found this out via my family’s Facebook page.]
A Gullah Geechee Christmas
I didn’t grow up here in Savannah, but I know that oysters are essential for New Year’s Day. I am still learning about lowcountry cuisine, but here’s a great essay about Gullah Geechee holiday eating.
This Christmas
This is a beautiful illustration of Donny Hathaway’s classic Christmas song.
