Nichelle Newsletter is a food and culture newsletter and this week, I am bringing more culture. The HBO show Succession is back! I had tater tots last Thursday not knowing that I would be on trend.
The One Where Adam Gets A Microwave
Adam Roberts, AKA The Amateur Gourmet, is someone who has been blogging/writing about food for probably as long as I have. I read his Substack and he finally got a microwave after twenty years. He also mentions Vallery Lomas’ new cookbook and I have included it in my Bookshop list.
Cheesemonger Anne Saxelby Dies at 40
When I lived in New York, I used to frequent Anne Saxelby’s stand at Essex St. Market. I was fascinated by all the varieties of cheese that Anne had. She also made me feel comfortable to ask questions about cheese. Anne helped redefine the independent cheese industry and was a leader in the New York artisan food community.
Aunt Jemima, Mammy and Me
I read this excellent essay from Mecca Bos on Taste about Aunt Jemima and this quote struck me.
Aunt Jemima was masterminded precisely to deny the reality of Black female greatness emerging from the plantation kitchen.
Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey: Fawn Weaver
I am recommending a podcast episode because Fawn Weaver has got to be one of the most interesting women in the world. She is the founder of Uncle Nearest, one of the fastest growing liquor brands. Listen to this episode of How I Built This With Guy Raz where Fawn talks about how she started a whiskey distillery.
Fall Flavors and a Mini Rant
Listen to my podcast where I talk about fall flavors and I go on a mini rant about something that I have already forgotten. :)
Have a delicious week,
Nichelle
