What I Made
Happy Juneteenth! In honor of Juneteenth, I made red drink. I brewed Celestial Seasonings’ Black Cherry herbal tea and added simple syrup and a lemon slice. It tasted just like the Black Cherry Kool-Aid I used to make when I was a kid. Delicious!
Food Quote Of The Week
At Juneteenth, the official beverage is the “red drink” -red soda, red Kool-Aid, or red punch. The tradition of red drinks began mostly with the parts of two plant: the kola nuts, a seed of the cola plant, and the hibiscus pod, the innermost part of the roselle flower. West African culture came to the US with the transatlantic slave trade, and so the drinking tradition of seeds steeped in water became incised into Black people’s DNA.-Nicole Taylor
