It’s been a rollercoaster of a week. I was going to visit family, but the Omicron variant and the scarcity of at home tests have made it near impossible. Travel during the holidays is never going back to normal. I am so lucky to have friends in Savannah that have extended invitations to holiday dinners so that I am not alone.
Panettone at the French Disco
Panettone is an Italian sweet bread which is speckled with raisins, citrus, and almonds and has a plush, buttery texture that is popular both here and all over Italy during the winter holidays. If you see it at the grocery store, then buy it. Panettone makes for great French toast. That’s what my friend Jenn made for breakfast on Christmas morning. Another use for Panettone is to make a delicious and easy bread pudding.
Pass The Peas
Black-eyed peas are not the only field peas that you can use for Hoppin’ John. Southern Living guides you through the different varieties of field peas and you can use them for your New Year’s Day festivities. Speaking of Black-eyed peas, check out this black-eyed pea salad recipe from Emily Nunn.
The Hunger
Hunger isn’t a scarcity issue. We can eradicate hunger, and there are people like Jasmine Crowe working hard to end it. Atlanta-based Jasmine Crowe and her company, Goodr, provide the speedy technology and new thinking to efficiently tap sources of food waste at corporations, grocery retailers and airports.
On To The Next One
Creating a Spotify playlist to convey the meaning of New Year’s Day is a challenge. I included tracks like Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff’s ‘Brand New Funk’ as well as The Roots ‘The Next Movement’. We often interchange the words new and next; however, they don’t mean the same thing. New is fresh. New is naive. Next is sequential. Next can be jaded. I will try to strike a balance with 2022. Let’s be hopeful for new year while thriving as we get through the next one.
