What I Ate
I ate collard greens with curry soup last week and it was a revelation. Here’s a curried greens recipe from Minimalist Baker that has a similar flavor profile. I had fried grouper fingers at Saltwater Cowboys in Mount Pleasant, SC. The batter for the fish was light and well-seasoned. I tried Wondermade Salted Caramel marshmallows and they are airy puffs of delight.
Food Means Things
Food is culture. Writing about food is writing about culture. Don’t let anyone downplay food writing. Check out this year’s James Beard media and book nominations. Congrats to old friends Cathy Erway and Jose Ralat.
Rest in peace Emily Meggett whose book, Gullah Geechee Home Cooking: Recipes from the Matriarch of Edisto Island was also nominated for a James Beard.

You just want something to keep your stomach from growling. Here’s some great suggestions on how to feed people who are grieving.

Soil
Happy Pub Day to Camille Dungy! Her book, Soil: The Story Of A Black Mother’s Garden, is out today, May 2nd. I got an advanced copy, and I highly recommend. [Hint: This book would be a good Mother’s Day gift.]
