FOND FOOD MEMORIES
I noticed that what I like to eat can depend on my life experiences. I grew to love Saag Paneer because of going to an Indian place with my friends from college. I sprinkle ground clove in my homemade chili because I love Skyline Chili from Cincinnati. What food do you love based on memories?
BLACK FOOD FOLKS
I have been catching culinary IG Lives featuring Black people in food. I have seen Jessica B. Harris, Bryant Terry, Matthew Raiford, Jovan Sage, Alexander Smalls and Nicole Taylor speak about food history, food in the time of Covid-19 and the future of food. Follow Black Food Folks on Instagram. I have curated a list of cookbooks and you can check them out on Bookshop.
MARK BITTMAN’S 5 GOLDEN RULES OF THE KITCHEN
Read the recipe before starting is the best advice. I recommend reading the recipe out loud.
COOL BEANS and NUTS
There’s a case to be made that we should incorporate plant-based proteins in our diet. Obviously, the food supply chain for meat is a concern, but plant-based proteins pack more nutrients with less calories.
COCKTAILS
Pantry cooking and baking have been getting enough attention. How about making cocktail syrups from what’s in your pantry? Make Cocktail Syrups with Whatever’s In Your Spice Cabinet.
SUPPORT
I know there’s a lot of nonprofit organizations that need help. Donations are great, but if can’t give, then spread the word. There is a nonprofit founded by Rachel Cargle doing important work, The Loveland Foundation. They have a therapy fund for with a particular focus on Black women and girls.
Have a delicious week,
Nichelle
