What’s another term for “staycation”? I asked friends and I got a lot of responses. Breathing space and naycation are my favorites.
White Claw, Naw.
I am not a fan of White Claw or Truly. These low calorie hard seltzers often lack flavor or have a weird aftertaste. However, I had a Red, White and Berry Smirnoff Seltzer and it is delicious. It tastes like a bomb pop that you would get from an ice cream truck. Inside Hook has a roundup of their favorite hard seltzers.
He Was the Only Black Man Making Liquor in America. Not Much Has Changed
I met Jackie Summer through friends years ago. His liqueur Sorel is a Caribbean caribbean hibiscus blended with Brazilian clove, Indonesian cassia and Nigerian ginger. It is must-have for any adventurous bartender. It’s great to read his perspective on Esquire.com.
Lost With No Translation
Food writing is rarely translated into English. I never thought about it until I read Alicia Kennedy’s latest piece. Does food actually unite us? Bettina Makalintal asks the question as she reviews Padma Laksmhi’s new Hulu show, ‘Taste the Nation’.
Sidework
I listen to a lot of podcasts, and it’s cool when you actually know the host. Brooke Van Poppelen is a comedian who I met years ago when I was running a standup comedy show featuring women, Chicks and Giggles. She lives in LA now and she co-hosts Sidework, a podcast that focuses on the news and stories from people working in the service industry. It’s funny and relatable.
The Camera Was On
Rashad West is a young restaurateur in Minneapolis, and his surveillance camera has the receipts of George Floyd’s arrest.
