My grandfather, who lived to the ripe old age of 95, died nine years ago. I remember that Charlie used to make plum wine from plums grown in his backyard. He would let me have a taste when I was a kid, but I remembered it tasting like cough syrup. Today, I would love to make a plum shrub and top it off with seltzer.
USHG Reopens Restaurants to Feed Food Insecure
Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group is repurposing three of his restaurants to feed people who are food insecure. A few months ago, USHG was in the news because they received a PPP loan. Following the backlash, the company returned the loan. Now they are partnering with Rethink Food to provide 125,000 meals in the Bronx. This is really interesting, and I will be following this story.
Spicy Chicken Sandwich and More
GrubHub just release the top food trends of 2020 and the spicy chicken sandwich is number one. Give the marketing team at Popeye’s a round of applause. Popeye’s started the spicy chicken sandwich trend and restaurants scrambled to make their own version. Some other items on the list include chimichanga, beef burritos and potato taco proving that Mexican cuisine is very popular.
Goya Gone
The CEO of Goya is a supporter of the current administration. Some people are incensed and speaking on it. I think that if you can make a sourdough starter then you can make your own adobo seasoning. As I scroll Twitter, I see there’s both a boycott and “buycott”. Buycott is not a real thing and neither is “reverse racism”.
Some Restaurants Have Raised Wages for servers, But Will It Last?
People who work in restaurants need to be able to budget their money and manage their income. It’s impossible when you are paid $2.13/hr plus tips. Since the pandemic, tips are down 75% to 90% nationwide. One Fair Wage is working on changing the pay structure in the restaurant industry.
And Now For Something Completely Different..Fly Fishing
I had tickets to the Highwater Music Festival in April, but the festival was canceled due to COVID-19. There were a lot of music acts on the bill, but I was so excited to get a chance to see Mavis Staples and Brittany Howard. The upside is that I get to listen to Brittany Howard on a podcast about fishing, The Woman Angler.
