Food Nibbles
My friend Wendy and I created a new dessert, “strawberry short cornbread”. First, we baked cornbread in a cast iron skillet using a recipe from Garden and Gun. We modified the recipe by adding sour orange zest. Then we adapted a marscapone and heavy cream frosting from a red velvet cake recipe. Lastly, we macerated fresh strawberries and added blood orange liqueur. It was served à la minute.
What They Ate At The Met Gala
I was in New York, but I was not at the Met Gala. Chef Kwame posted what he and his team served.
We served nutcrackers, chopped cheese, greens, rice and peas, escovitch fish, cornbread and caviar at the Met. To put my culture on while uplifting the theme was the perfect backdrop to a historical night. Thank you to my team that always shows up whether it’s dinner service, a small event, Or a big night like this. The Bronx was definitely in the building.
My Week In Food
While in New York, I ate a lot of ethnic food. I had Chinese food in midtown on Friday. Cafe China has rooms upstairs for big groups. All of the fish dishes at Rebel, a Haitian restaurant in the Lower East Side were so amazing. I could be pescatarian if there were more restaurants that seasoned and cooked fish like Rebel does. For dessert, my friends and I enjoyed deep fried cheesecake.
What I Saw
Monday, I went to the Whitney Museum to see the Amy Sherald exhibit, American Sublime. It is fantastic. Her large portraits are colorful and larger than life. I also checked out Marina Zurkow’s exhibit. Her work explores the intersection of nature and culture through various mediums, including code, animation, and participatory experiences like dinners and card games. I really like the piece that is out on the terrace of the Whitney. Two more women artists to check out at the Whitney are Christine Sun Kim and the late Louise Nevelson.
