Champagne For My Real Friends
“Real pain for my sham friends.” is when you are drinking cheap sparkling wine. Eater has a guide for the best champagne.

Hoppin John
We eat black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year’s Day for luck and prosperity. If you haven’t made Hoppin’ John, here’s a good recipe. BTW, if you want to make this recipe without pork, substitute it with a combination of chicken broth, chopped mushrooms and chipotle peppers to get a great flavor.
Ranking is Stank
When did we start ranking years? When I was a kid, I only cared if the year was a leap year or not. I can understand having a bad day, but to say that there were 365 days in a row that were awful seems hyperbolic. I would rather not proclaim that 2022 was a good or a bad year. It just happened, and I thrived. I hope you all thrived in 2022.
Check out these nine foods meant to bring you luck in the new year.
Making resolutions is tricky. They often involve changing daily habits. Sticking to them can be hard. It’s easier to zoom out and change weekly habits which influence daily habits. I heard on a podcast that if you do the thing 4 out of the 7 days a week, then you are off to a good start.
Lunar New Year is January 22nd. It is the year of the Rabbit. International pop star Bad Bunny should do something amazing during the week of Lunar New Year.
On To The Next One
Creating a Spotify playlist to convey the meaning of New Year’s Day is a challenge. I included tracks like Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff’s ‘Brand New Funk’ as well as The Roots ‘The Next Movement’. We often interchange the words new and next; however, they don’t mean the same thing. New is fresh. New is naive. Next is sequential. Next can be jaded. I will try to strike a balance with 2023. Let’s be hopeful for new year while thriving as we get through the next one.
Wishing you the most happy, most delicious 2023, Nichelle!!!
