My Week In Food And Drink
Occasionally, I eat lunch with a friend of mine who is both gluten and dairy-free. We either eat Asian cuisine or she cooks. The other day, she made tacos using Violife vegan cheddar cheese and I was surprised at how much it tasted like real cheese.
My friends and neighbors hosted a progressive dinner which has nothing to do with politics. Five hosts invited neighbors for five “courses”. There were drinks, appetizers, dinner, dessert and the after party. I progressively got to know new neighbors and drink too much Chatham Artillery Punch which is a Savannah classic cocktail. It was a blast!
Toni Tipton-Martin, author of The Jemima Code and editor of Cook’s Country, was in town last week. It was great to see her!
The James Beard media award nominations were announced last week. Many of the people who I have mentioned in this newsletter over the past two years were nominated. Congrats to Marcia Chatelain, Cheryl Day, Adrian Miller, José Ralat, Jackie Summers, Bryant Terry, and more. The winners of the book, broadcast, and journalism awards will be announced in Chicago on June 11th.
Bake Something Sweet
It is summer weather here in Savannah. However, that doesn’t mean you stop baking. You can make Dorie Greenspan chocolate chip cookies with a caramel twist, or you can bake cosmic brownies that are better than Little Debbie’s.
A Wakanda Cookbook
I thought this was a gimmick, but this is really cool. Chef Nyanyika Banda is the author of The Official Wakanda Cookbook which includes gluten-free and vegan dishes as well as African recipes like okra fritters. This cookbook is a fun way to introduce African cuisine into your cooking rotation.
Fry, Robin, Fry
My Dad got an air fryer. It is one of those appliances that has about a dozen functions. I have a pretty Drew Barrymore one which has four buttons. According to Tasting Table, here are the best uses for an air fryer.
New Podcast Episode
I talk about jasmine, ramps, buckwheat pancakes and more.
Have a delicious week,
Nichelle
