The Smithsonian is looking to a hire permanent curator of food and wine history. The curator will lead the museum's "American Food History Project."
Hunger is a Solvable Problem
There is so much hunger in this country. According to the nonprofit Feeding America, 15 million people in this country will experience low food security this year. It seems to me that the hunger problem can be fixed because there is so much food waste from restaurants, grocery stores and even farms. There’s a farm to food bank program in Maryland. Why isn’t there a tech start-up working to disrupt hunger?
Tastes Like Chicken?!
I recorded a podcast episode about the tuna salad at Subway and other stuff.
Beer Arrivals and Departures
My old friend Chris O’Leary has a beer Substack, Brew York and Beyond. Chris has been writing about craft beer for years. Recently he wrote about the best airports that have beer bars. None of the beer bars are in busy airports like JFK or Atlanta but there’s a good list.
Make Cucumber Ketchup
Do something more with cucumber from your garden than make pickles or cucumber salad. Make cucumber ketchup. Allison Robicelli shares an easy recipe for making cucumber ketchup that doesn’t involve tomatoes at all. This condiment is great for fish and vegetables.
Stand and Deliver
I am listening to a podcast series which is a collaboration with Eater and Recode. Land of the Giants, Delivery Wars is about third party food delivery services. After listening to the first episode, I cannot in good conscience order food from one again. Restaurant owners are comparing delivery apps to the mafia since they a large cut of their sales, yet these apps have yet to make a profit.
